TMJ (Jaw Joint) Discomfort

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) discomfort is a common issue that can lead to a range of symptoms, including clicking, tension, and severe pain while eating or talking. This discomfort often arises from inflammation within the joint or surrounding tissues, which may include cartilage, ligaments, nerves, or blood vessels. These inflamed tissues can cause restrictions that lead to pain and dysfunction in the jaw.

Assessment

One client came to see me with excruciating TMJ pain, rated at a level 8-9. Her condition was evaluated, and it became evident that the root cause of her discomfort involved both ligament restrictions in her neck and issues with the cartilage in her TMJ.

Another client presented with neck tension and jaw pain. Upon assessment, the primary areas of concern were the top three vertebrae in her spine, where neurovascular restrictions were identified.

Treatment

In the first case, I focused on releasing the ligaments in her neck and addressing the cartilage issues in her TMJ. This was done using a combination of gentle manual techniques designed to alleviate the restrictions and reduce inflammation.

For the second client, treatment involved releasing restrictions in the top three vertebrae of her spine, with special attention to the neurovascular components that were contributing to her pain.

Results

The first client experienced a 95% reduction in pain immediately after the session, with the remaining tension resolved in a follow-up visit.

The second client found complete relief from her neck tension and jaw pain after just one session.

How Treatment Helps with TMJ Discomfort:

  • Inflammation Reduction: The treatment techniques used help reduce inflammation within the TMJ and surrounding areas, allowing for natural healing and pain relief.
  • Improved Mobility: By releasing restrictions in the ligaments, cartilage, and other tissues, treatment improves the mobility of the jaw, reducing pain and dysfunction.
  • Holistic Approach: This approach considers the entire body, addressing underlying issues that may be contributing to TMJ discomfort, even if they are not directly located in the jaw.

If you or someone you know is experiencing TMJ discomfort, consider exploring treatment options that focus on identifying and addressing the root causes of the pain for lasting relief.
